Websites and High School Jeans

When I talk with clients about website copy, I often bring up the two main approaches to web design: copy-driven design and templated (or framework) architecture.

With copy-driven design, we start with the heart of your website—your message. We craft the copy first, ensuring your brand’s voice and story are front and center. Then, the design is built around your words, creating a seamless experience that perfectly aligns with what you want to communicate.

Think of copy-driven design like tailoring a suit to fit you perfectly, instead of forcing yourself into a one-size-fits-all option.

On the other hand, templated or framework architecture is like filling in the blanks on a pre-designed canvas. You start with a set structure and try to fit your content into it.

Honestly, it’s not my favorite. It’s a bit like a "Mad Libs" game—sometimes it works out, but often it leaves your message feeling squeezed or out of place.

While templated designs can be quick and cost-effective, they rarely capture the unique essence of your brand.

Copy-driven design, however, ensures your website is as unique as you are, with a message that resonates and design that enhances, not hinders.

You’ve probably already figured out that I lean toward copy-driven design as a copywriter. That said, templated designs aren’t entirely off the table—they just need more customization to shine.
