Stop Sending Emails Like This
Although I usually radiate positivity as the ray of sunshine that I am, today, my dear friends, I'm about to unleash a storm that would dwarf even the mightiest of Daenerys Targaryen's wrath on Game of Thrones.
As an email marketer, it's hardly surprising that I subscribe to a plethora of emails. A significant portion of them are solicitations for various writing programs. Lately, there's been a surge in "sales pitches" enticing me to join programs aimed at helping me write my next book.
I put the quotes around “sales pitches” on purpose. Yep. I’m sure you can see where this is going.
Here’s the gist of what 99% of these emails right now:
Pardon me for asking, but WHAT IN THE NAME OF SWEET JESUS IS THAT?
Seriously, that's not a sales pitch. It's more akin to a child in the backseat during a road trip, repeatedly asking, "Are we there yet?" Or, as my younger daughter used to inquire, "Are we still in Connecticut?"
This tactic also guarantees I hit the unsubscribe button, which is exactly what I did.
This leads me to my next point of complaint.
At least one of these lists I’ve unsubscribed from IS STILL EMAILING ME, begging for me to come back.
I’m having flashbacks of my college boyfriend, who always seemed to conveniently appear just when I was starting to enjoy my newfound freedom after one of our "breaks" from each other.
Okay, now that I’ve vented my spleen about this, what do I suggest instead?
Show your value.
That’s it. Tell me why I should (re)consider my decision. Show me some results in the form of testimonials (I know, here I go again, but this is a prime example of when you should consider inserting one or two into your sales copy).
